These devices share more than they differ: all estimate sleep from movement and cardiovascular signals, all classify stages with modest accuracy, and all wrap their output in a proprietary score. The useful comparison is fit to the question you are asking, not which brand is "most accurate."
Form factor drives data quality
- Ring (Oura). Comfortable for overnight wear, strong compliance, good temperature trend data. Small sensor surface; interference from hand movement.
- Strap (WHOOP). Screenless and continuous, oriented toward training load and recovery. Appeals to athletes; less useful if you want a watch.
- Watch (Apple Watch). Broad health ecosystem and clinical integrations through Apple Health, but charging habits and comfort reduce consistent overnight wear for some users.
Choosing well
If the question is when do I sleep and how regular is it, any of them works, and the best device is the one you will actually wear every night. If the question is do I have a sleep disorder, none of them answers it. If the question is how does my training load interact with recovery, the strap-based ecosystem is purpose-built for it.
For teams and organizations
Device choice matters less than governance: consent, data access, who interprets the output, and what happens when a red flag appears. That is a program design question, not a hardware question.
