Heart rate variability (HRV) is the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher nocturnal HRV generally reflects greater parasympathetic (recovery) activity; lower HRV reflects sympathetic dominance from stress, illness, alcohol, heat, training load, or fragmented sleep.
Why sleep is where HRV is measured
Daytime HRV is contaminated by posture, movement, speech, and caffeine. Overnight — especially in the most stable portion of sleep — the measurement is comparatively clean, which is why most wearables report a sleeping HRV average.
How to read it
- Compare to yourself, never to others. Absolute HRV varies enormously by age, genetics, and measurement method.
- Use rolling baselines. A 7- to 14-day trend is informative; one night is mostly noise.
- Interpret with context. A drop after a hard training block means something different than a drop after three nights of alcohol.
What it is not
HRV is not a diagnostic marker, not a direct measure of sleep quality, and not a performance prediction. Used well it is a prompt to look at behavior — training, alcohol, timing, illness. Used poorly it becomes another number to worry about at 3 a.m.
